What are Hormonal Disorders?

Hormonal disorders are imbalances in the secretion of hormones in the body. Imbalances in the secretion of hormones leads to various health complications depending upon the hormone that is imbalanced.

Hormonal imbalances affect both men and women. They are caused due to endocrine disorders. Hormonal disorders can lead to disruptions in metabolism, sleep cycles, mood and psychological state, heart rate, reproduction and fertility, and even temperature of the body.

Hormonal disorders manifest in different forms in men and women. In men, the most common hormonal disorder is testosterone deficiency or low testosterone. This leads to infertility, lack of sexual drive, low sperm count, and erectile dysfunction.

Women tend to have hormonal disorders during their puberty, pregnancy, and before and after menopause. Hormonal disorders in women lead to PCOS, infertility, menstrual disorders, osteoporosis, thyroid disorders, and many others.

Hormonal disorders are treated by endocrinologists with hormone replacement therapy or hormone therapies. In order to improve fertility, one has to opt for these therapies along with assisted reproductive technologies.

Treatment for various hormonal disorders is provided by endocrinologists. Treatment is generally prescribed after a detailed investigation including blood works, imaging, and other diagnostic tests.

Treatment options for hormonal imbalances and disorders include medications and surgery. Hormonal replacement therapies like estrogen replacement therapy, testosterone replacement therapy, thyroid hormone therapy can be prescribed as per your condition by your physician.

In certain cases, patients might require surgery for removal of tumors, partial/complete removal of the glands, and others.
